KFC Colonel’s Scholars Program for High School Sophomores

To be eligible for this scholarship program applicants must have plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree. Scholarship award winners may begin at a two year university or a four year university, provided it is accredited and provided they remain on track to complete a bachelor’s degree. Applicants are further required to have at least a 2.75 cumulative GPA. Applications are accepted beginning in December and are taken through early February. The scholarship is worth $20,000.

Kohl’s Kids Who Care Scholarships for Sophomores in High School

This scholarship provides for awards between $50 and $5,000. To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must demonstrate efforts that exceed actions of what would be typically expected of a student their age. All volunteer efforts should result in a positive impact on others and should have taken place within the prior twelve months. The deadline to apply for this scholarship is mid-March.

MaxPreps Citizen Athlete High School Sophomore Scholarship

This scholarship program is specifically designed for encouraging citizenship in high school athletes. There are four primary areas to these scholarships, including school involvement, athletics, community service and academics. A total of ten scholarship winners will be chosen to receive a $2,500 scholarship. The deadline to apply or this scholarship is mid-March.

Holocaust Remembrance Project Scholarships for High School Sophomores

This scholarship program is operated through Holland and Knight Charitable Foundation. Scholarships through this program range between $100 and $10,000. To apply for this scholarship, you must submit an essay. Essay topics are subject to change each year but typically relate to the Holocaust. The deadline to apply for this scholarship is April 15th. New information on this scholarship program becomes available beginning each September.

National Peace Essay Contest for High School Sophomores

This scholarship opportunity is funded through the United States Institute of Peace. Awards range between $1,000 and $10,000. To be eligible students must attend a parochial school, high school correspondence program or public or private school. Applicants must submit an essay to apply and must also have a coordinator review the essay prior to submission.

The Alliance/Merck Ciencia Hispanic Scholars Program for Sophomores in High School

This scholarship program offers a $20,000 scholarship to be disbursed over a period of four years. The deadline to apply for this scholarship is February 15th. The scholarship is open to all high school students who are of Hispanic heritage. Applicants must have plans to pursue a career or major in technology, math, engineering or science.

Rhode Islanders Sponsoring Education is an organization dedicated to providing financial assistance to students in need of private high school scholarships. Students getting a scholarship from this organization will be able to access up to $3,500 in a single year and can also be provided with mentoring services to ensure strong progress through their school. Additional amounts of $2,500 can be awarded through the Scholars program. Parents should contact the organization for deadline information and additional requirements.

Students in the Chicago area will be able to apply to the Daniel Murphy Scholarship Fund. Amounts will depend varying on where a student is going to school and how much aid they are determined to need. All applicants must be going to a private high school and live in either Chicago or a surrounding suburb. Applications must be submitted no later than May 13.

The Latino Student Fund provides an immense amount of money every year in the form of scholarships for private high schools to help minority families be able to afford elementary and secondary education. Students can be entering school at any level from pre-kindergarten to grade 12. Pre-k to 5th graders will receive $500, 6-8th graders $1,000 and high schoolers will be eligible for $1,500. Applicants must be of Latino descent, have a strong academic record, and be attending a school supported by the Latino Student Fund. Applications open in the middle of January every year.

Students in the Boston area will be able to apply for private high school scholarships through the Catholic Schools Foundation which is linked directly to the Archdiocese of Boston. Funding amounts will vary school to school and are based on overall tuition costs in combination with financial need. Students who are attending or planning to attend a Catholic school in Boston area will be eligible to apply. As deadlines will also vary school to school, parents should contact their child’s school’s principle for more information.

Philadelphia based White-Williams Scholars program gives out private high school scholarships to students who meet their eligibility requirements. All applicants will need to be residents of Philadelphia, be in high school, live in a single parent home, and be able to demonstrate financial need. Awards of $1,500 are generally given out and all applications should be turned in during the spring of an upcoming academic year.

Dick Blick Linoleum Block Print Contest

Each year, Dick Blick sponsors a contest for block prints that are made exclusively from linoleum. There are three different divisions to this contest, including one that is for grades 7 through 9. Each division of the contest includes a first prize worth $400, a second prize of $250 and a third prize of $150. There are also two honorable mention prizes worth $50. The deadline to apply for this contest is March 15th.

Doodle 4 Google Scholarships for High School Freshmen

Students who enjoy doodling and art may wish to apply for the Doodle 4 Google competition to earn money for college. There are four different grade groups for this competition, including one specifically for grades 7 through 9. Each grade group will have a national finalist. The national winner will be awarded a $15,000 college scholarship as well as a trip to visit the Google office in New York, a laptop and a digital tablet. Additionally, the winner’s school will receive a $25,000 technology grant. All finalists receive a $5,000 scholarship, digital tablet and trip to visit Google. The deadline to apply for this scholarship is in early-March.

DuPont Challenge Science Essay Competition

DuPont Center for Collaborative Research and Education is sponsoring an essay competition in conjunction with General Learning Communication. There are two different grade divisions for this scholarship competition, including one that is open to grades 7 through 9. Applicants are asked to write an essay of between 700 and 1,000 words related to a development, theory or event in technological or scientific development. Topic areas may include earth sciences, physical sciences, life sciences, chemical sciences, space technology or environmental sciences. Within each grade division, there will be a first place winner who will receive a $5,000 U.S. Savings Bond award, a second place winner who will receive a $3,000 U.S. Savings Bond award and a third place winner who will receive a $2,000 U.S. Savings Bond award. There will also be several honorable mentions that will receive smaller bond awards. First through third place winners receive an additional expenses paid trip to visit the Space Center in Houston. The deadline to apply is mid-January.

National Marbles Tournament Scholarships for High School Freshmen

Students interested in scholarships for high school freshmen may also wish to apply for the annual National Marbles Tournament for the opportunity to win a scholarship award. The tournament is held annually each June. Two $2,000 scholarships are awarded along with two $1,000 sportsmanship awards.

CollegeInvest Early Achievers Scholarship for High School Freshmen

Formerly known as the College in Colorado Scholarship, this high school freshmen scholarship program is specifically for Colorado students who are in the 7th, 8th or 9th grades. Award winners may qualify to receive up to $1,500 per year for up to five years to attend an eligible college in Colorado. The deadline to apply is June 1st of your freshman or 9th grade year. To qualify, students must graduate with a minimum 2.5 GPA for all coursework during high school and complete the FAFSA and be eligible for the Federal Pell Grant. Students will also need to attend college at least half-time.
